Firebug is known to make Google Mail slow unless it is configured correctly!
Firebug is one of the most useful browser extensions for web developers. It allows a developer to look in-depth at the HTML and CSS code which makes up the page and follow any asynchronous connections fired by the web page.
Unfortunately, because Firebug ‘listens’ to all connections made, AJAX-heavy websites such as Gmail can often run slow when Firebug is running. The developers behind Gmail recognise this and will display a message stating that “Firebug is known to make Google Mail slow unless it is configured correctly” if they detect Firebug is running.
In the original version of the plug-in, this could be dismissed by clicking the firebug icon situated in the browser chrome along the bottom of the browser and chosing to disable the plug-in for gmail.
In version 1.5.3 though, this has been changed. To disable Firebug simply click the “off” button in the top right hand corner of the Firebug console window.
I’m not sure why this has been changed, but it certainly made a huge difference to my Gmail experience until I figured out how to change it back!
